HUMAX HAL CONCEPT TV.

HUMAX HAL CONCEPT TV.

HAL CONCEPT TV FROM HUMAX designed by Tej Chauhan and Sach Chauhan.

The new concept TV called HAL takes big strides away from the norm with this excellent
design.
Humax have acknowledged that picture quality is not in sinc with sound quality. HAL
features an extra set of speakers in the base to provide improved acoustic clarity.
Will this concept TV be available for future freesat channels? Only time will tell.

HUMAX HOME MEDIA SERVER.

HUMAX HOME MEDIA SERVER.

Humax: We see that the digital TV will be the most important medium. Not only for entertainment, but also for information especially for the European market. Panasonic Viera, TH-42PZ81, TH-46PZ81, TH-50PZ81 FREESAT TV.

Panasonic Viera,
TH-42PZ81, TH-46PZ81, TH-50PZ81

First details about the new range of FREESAT TV's have started to emerge and excitement is starting to build for the first FREESAT Enabled HDTV SET.
Image quality is what this latest Panasonic is all about with Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, which means high definition 1080p
sources are displayed with pixel sharpness and clarity assured.
This Panasonic will also accept a 1080p 24Hz signal and display it without converting it to 60Hz using the new Real Cinema technology so I for one
can't wait to really test this screen out later. With 100Hz processing, x-v-Colour wide gamut processing there's a lot going on here with no less than three HDMI 1.3 ports and more connections than onw would know what to do with. Panasonic has also included an SD card slot that is normally found in their top spec TV's,
and can only play back JPEG images also included is the AVCHD capability of high definition footage for example taking it direct from a camcorder.
One of the most interesting features of this FREESAT ENABLED TV is the fact this Panasonic TV has no less that three onboard TV tuners
and with multi-satellite compatibility making this Panasonic FREESAT ENABLED TV with Full HD Resolution of 1920 x 1080 a worlds first.
More information to follow soon!

MULTIMEDIA COST AND BT's 21st CENTURY NETWORK PROJECT.

MULTIMEDIA COST AND BT's 21st CENTURY NETWORK PROJECT.

MULTIMEDIA COST FROM FREESAT IS SET TO BECOME A ROASTING HOT POTATO AND NOT BECAUSE OF MULTIMEDIA COOKING PROGRAMMES BUT FOR OTHER MORE OBVIOUS PICTURES.
KANGAROO/iPOWER IS A PROJECT THAT MEETS EVERYBODY'S IDEA OF PERFECT TV POSSIBILITY'S.
WE TOOK ANOTHER LOOK AT THE UNSEEN COST BUT IT MUST COME TO THE FOREFRONT AS BT's 21st CENTURY NETWORK PROJECT APPROACHES COMPLETION IN AND AROUND 2012.
LOOK AT THE FIGURES, FOR EXAMPLE BT's BASIC PACKAGE AND THEIR FAIR AND ACCEPTABLE USAGE POLICY (FUP) WHICH IS 5GB AND ANYTHING AFTER THIS GETS THROTTLED.
ANYONE USING THE BT INTERNET TO DOWNLOAD AND VIEW HIGH DEFINITION (HD) MAY WELL BE SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT THEIR FUP WILL TRIGGER AFTER 15 MINUTES OF USE.
WE ALREADY KNOW THAT THE BBC RESEARCH AND INNOVATION TEAM HAVE DEVISED A NEW COMPRESSION METHOD WHICH HOPEFULLY ADRESS'S THIS MASSIVE ISP HEADACHE. WE WATCH WITH GREAT INTEREST AS THIS MEDIA PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE ADOPTED IN COUNTRIES LIKE THE U.S.A.
ALTHOUGH IMPOSSIBLE BUT TO GIVE ISP USERS AN IDEA OF THE ASTRONOMICAL BANDWIDTH NEEDED TO WATCH AN AVERAGE MONTHS VIEWING IN HIGH DEFINITION (HD), THE AVERAGE TV USER WATCHES FOR APPROX. 5 HOURS A DAY AND IF THAT USER WAS CONTINUALLY WATCHING HD ON THE INTERNET THE BANDWIDTH NEED FOR 1 MONTHS VIEWING WOULD BE APPROX. 3900 GB. WHICH IS EQUIVALANT TO 780 BASIC BT USER PACKAGES USING 5 GB PER MONTH.
FREESAT PUSH-VIDEO HERE WE COME!

HEROES BBC AUDIO NARRATION.

HEROES BBC AUDIO NARRATION is very, very impressive.

After hearing so much about Heroes, the smash hit series from America we had to have an Audio Narration trial.
The Humax Foxsat audio control on the Humax Foxsat remote works perfectly to change from stereo to this superb audio narration feature.
We started watching in normal stereo ( brilliant sound) and then changed to audio narration, sat back and closed our eyes and we were there in the scenes with the characters the audio narration quality is excellent and there is no doubt in the listeners mind exactly what is going on. There was a part with English subtitles with the parts spoken in Japanese and the audio narration handled the section with no obvious time slips. What a huge difference this will make in many viewers lives and yet again our BBC research and innovation team can take a bow for bringing those who need to feel part of the visual experience a step closer.
One only has to hear the audio narration in action to appreciate the work and effort that has gone into this added set top box unique freesat extra. TV for some will never be the same again.
Thank you BBC for adding this feature into the metadata, those amongst us who are blind and partially sited will be thrilled when proper educational information is released about this excellent metadata feature.

BEIJING OLYMPICS COUNTDOWN.

BEIJING OLYMPICS COUNTDOWN starts today for the BBC Freesat Beijing Olympics coverage from Friday 8th of August 2008 until Sunday 24th of August.
The seven hour time difference from GMT means while we sleep another session of sporting competition will be in full swing.
It would be wrong to mention the Beijing Olympics without mentioning the awful hardship being faced by many after the Earthquake and like all nations our hearts go out to the people of China at this time.
The Olympics are one way of nations coming together for understanding and friendship and many new stars are born at these world class events. Who could forget Mark Spitz winning 7 gold medals in the 1972 Olympics.
The countdown to the Beijing Olympics starts today marking 70 days or ten weeks tomorrow is the opening ceremony.
We have our front seat booked with our Freesat boxes set for BBC HD, roll on the 8'th August 2008. DO YOU ?

HUMAX FOXSAT SEARCH FUNCTION.

HUMAX FOXSAT FREESAT SET TOP BOX SEARCH FUNCTION.

Humax Foxsat is starting to show some nice little hidden touches which we have no doubt will keep active remote control fans overjoyed.
A nice little search function is housed within the "Guide" menu. Wait until the guide menu gets loaded (the picture reflects through from behind) the press O.K. and along the top of the menu select the blue button which says "Find". You then get a menu with;
Keyboard
Genre
Time & Day
Search
Highlighting Keyword with the word "All" in it and pressing O.K. brings up an individual programme search menu via switchable SMS & Keyboard...clever Humax touch!
The more we look at the Humax Foxsat menu, the more we are convinced we have still to see more. These nice little keyboard and SMS pads are very clever in their design and regular use of them can only be self educating for those who intend to make full use of the future multimedia functions from the metadata and as multimedia is implemented the Humax Foxsat user will be fully conversant with the clever SMS and keyboard menu.

HUMAX FOXSATHD PICTURE QUALITY.

HUMAX FOXSATHD FREESAT SET TOP BOX picture quality enhancements.

While everybody is concerned about the content management being implemented in the Humax Foxsat component connection we have been surprised that nobody has mentioned the enhanced picture quality which we can only suggest may have been implemented into the 1.07 Humax Foxsat update.
We have found that by switching off as described in the content management splash screen the suggestion of switching off the analogue HD output the HD and the HD upscaling has improved.
The colours are more vivid and the picture quality seems much clearer so either the Humax Foxsat picture has been enhanced or the switching off, of the HD analogue connection has improved the Humax Foxsat HD picture and also the HD upscaling.
Is it news to you ? the you read it here first!

EUROSPORT HD CHANNEL FREE TO AIR.

EUROSPORT HD CHANNEL FREE TO AIR for non freesat set top boxes.
With uncertainty of possible HD available channel we thought it might be a good time to pass on other possible free to air pick up points on other not so well known satellites.
HD being the future of tomorrow for broadcasters it seems prudent to find out exactly what channels are showing HD testing or other wise.
This graphic (click it to enlarge) shows the FULL HD LOGO on the bottom right of the screen and although we got camera feedback the picture is brilliant.
We would also point out that we used a pace 810xe to find the above graphic on Hotbird 13 East.
and for those technically minded the parameters are;
Hotbird 7A 13East

HUMAX FOXSAT COMPONENT CONNECTION DISABLED.

HUMAX FOXSAT COMPONENT CONNECTION DISABLED.

HUMAX FOXSAT SET TOP BOX UPDATE 1.07 seems to have moved the goalposts with respect to HD viewing.
The latest Humax Foxsat set top box update has raised a few questions with regards to viewing HD programmes via the component connection and has left many Humax Foxsat viewers with no component output on HD channels on the BBC HD freesat platform.
We have had questions which are getting more difficult to answer about the Humax Foxsat and some have come from viewers who have bought the Humax Foxsat solely because it has component output as their TV's have no HDMI sockets. Many who already have the Humax Foxsat and suggest that the picture was better via the analogue component rather than the HDMI socket.
The 1.07 update to the Humax Foxsat does not affect the Grundig Gufsat, Goodmans GFsat or the Bush BFsat set top boxes as these have no component outputs.
The strong possibility of the freesat platform promises more and more HD channels being added to the platform so the loss of the Humax Foxsat component means that any future HD channels may be showing a black screen via the component output. This will mean that the Humax Foxsat freesat set top box adverts may need to be changed to allow for this component change.
In hindsite we are surprised that the component door had been left open by Humax as we were under the impression that ALL freesat boxes prior to launch were expected to have content management built in to control copying and export of content switched on.
We now know the use for the Humax Foxsat component output can be used for upscaling of non-HD content.
Buyers should not be influenced by the loss of the component connection as we feel this should already have been implemented on the component connection and it does not take away from the more than capable Humax Foxsat set top box.

FREESAT DIGITAL TELEVISION RECORDERS.

FREESAT DIGITAL TELEVISION RECORDERS.

Freesat digital television recorders will be with us very soon so we feel this may be a good time to consider what you want from the freesat DTR.
Looking well ahead to the future the first thing users will want is "easy to use", and unlike the "set it and forget it", with freesat we will need a little bit more effort on the user to read their manuals for DTR's.
The BBC have tested 100 hour downloads into their hard drives which at first seems a lot of space but anybody who has a hard drive will tell you 1000 gbs on a computer is nothing if they have a film or record collection.
The average joe watches around 5 hours of TV a day which equates to 20 days (of non HD television broadcasts) or 20 hours of HD if you go by the BBC testing of 100 hours, this in reality is worse than useless for the purpose needed for the freesat DTR's. We reckon a 500 gb hard drive has got to be a minimum and anything less than 500 gb is going to fill up very quickly. 500 gb will fill up even faster if using HD (high definition) as most folks will want their own library of favourite programmes. 500 gb is only about 130 films, many have over 1000 in their favourite library. What about the music libraries ? get the idea!
We have to remember with these new DTR's there are no copy of the HD content to another disc facility as content management are embeded to control copying and export of content, so all thoughts of using the new DTR's to record and copy HD content is a no go area, you can however do exactly as you do now via the scart connection from the freesat set top boxes.
If the new DTR's are expected to sometime take the new Push-Video then we can expect the first DTR batches NOT to have them on board but may have the facilty to update later so this too highlights the 500 gb as too small also.

FREESAT BUSH HD DIGITAL BOX SIGNAL CHECK.

FREESAT BUSH HD DIGITAL BOX SIGNAL CHECK.

This is the second splash screen after you first switch on the Bush HD version of the Freesat HD Boxes.

This is a slightly different approach than is taken in the Grundig Gufsat HD Digital Box.

This process takes no more than five minutes to complete as it checks the boxes signal strength from the external satellite dish!

BUSH HD FREESAT DIGITAL BOX FULL SCAN.

BUSH HD FREESAT DIGITAL BOX FULL SCAN.

This screen shot shows the Bush HD Box doing a full scan for both TV and Radio Channels it starts off at 18 minutes and this may mean that once the service is fully operational there may be lots of information on its EPG.

The scan actually takes about five minutes to complete, please do not unplug the box for any reason as this may break your box best bet would be to go and get a quick cup of beverage before the real fun of Freesat becomes a reality for you!

BUSH BFSAT01HD BENCH TEST EXCLUSIVE.

BUSH BFSAT01HD freesat bench test.

In the interest of this report for those interested we left the Bush BFsat01HD powered up for the last 24 hours. We wanted to check things like heat and picture and also to see if the box showed any problems.
As this budget receiver is "Exclusive", to Argos we really wanted to make sure our own honest reputation was not being compromised as official agents for Argos as we are fully aware satellite knowledge cannot be learned overnight or on a two day course for retail managers. We also know before a freesat set top box can be sold in the U.K. it has to have underwent stringent tests by the top people in DTG Testing Ltd.
We selected the budget freesat receiver to see if there were any differences against the Humax Foxsat which we have already bench tested.
The Bush BFsat01HD picture cannot be faulted through the HDMI connection and leaving it connected via the HDMI we put the Bush BFsat01 HD through it's paces with respect to upscaling and downscaling.
For those unsure the term upscaling simply means when you scale from a lower resolution to a higher resolution and this affects things like pixels, interlacing and deinterlacing, frames etc..
For example; 720p being upscaled to a 1080i TV screen.
Downscaling is a reverse of the above.
With the Bush BFsat01HD we shifted and reset all possible parameters with a plasma TV which has a normal setting at 1080i, we tried it all sorts of combinations from the lowest to the highest and back again. The Bush BFsat01HD behaved impeccably with no problems.
As most buyers will be after an HD system this augers well for the Bush BFsat01HD as the majority of new style TV's are handling all sorts of screen sizes and settings.
We reckon when a buyer goes to get anything to do with TV their main concern is taking the item home and finding out later they have bought a lemon. The Bush BFsat01HD is not a lemon in fact you could call it a strawberry as using the Bush BFsat01HD for the viewer is sweet.
"Set it and Forget it", features, excellent picture for that HD programme, a child could use the Bush BFsat01HD, the price of £119.99 is very good and Argos have a winning freesat box.
We love the Bush and this is one of a couple we will be keeping.

BUSH HD FREESAT DIGITAL BOX AND CONTENTS.

BUSH HD FREESAT DIGITAL BOX AND CONTENTS.

The first thing you notice when you open this new Bush Freesat HD Box is the fact it is very well protected if it is in transit, there is very little danger of this Freesat HD Receiver getting damaged while being delivered to its new owner!

The box and its contents are as follows, Freesat Bush HD Digital Box, power brick, (that stays cool in use) Scart lead and a very classy remote control with silver buttons but it has no HDMI lead so to get full use of your new HD Box and if you have an HD Ready TV Set then you will need to invest in an HDMI - HDMI cable expect to pay £10-20 as the HD Quality from this HD Satellite Box is amazing!

COMPARISON SHOPPING FOR THE BUSH OR GRUNDIG FREESAT HD BOX.

COMPARISON SHOPPING FOR THE BUSH OR THE GRUNDIG FREESAT HD BOX.

Compare or Comparison of the Bush HD Freesat Box
and that of the Grundig Freesat HD Box is more down to personal
choice rather than technical ability of these said Freesat
HD Digital Boxes.

It has to be said these boxes with silver inlays are very smart indeed.
Both boxes also go very well with both Samsung and LG Plasma and LCD Flat Screen TVs.

BUSH BFSAT01HD REVIEW EXCLUSIVE.

BUSH BFSAT01HD REVIEW TEST AND REPORT.

We come to the last of the freesat HD set top boxes to test and report on.
BUSH BFSAT01HD set top box is yet another freesat offering in the same mould as the likes of the Grundig Gufsat01HD and the Goodmans GFsat200HD.
We have yet again "Set Up and Forget", features that will thrill new buyers of these freesat set top boxes. For so long now electronic equipment of all sorts have been intimidating users with just too many useless features.
You have to say watching the Bush BFsat01HD in action while on set up this too is a winner for the viewing British Public. The Bush BFsat01HD is not for those who like to lift the lid and see how it ticks, this set top box is made to be left alone.
The EPG is very similar to the Grundig Gufsat 01HD and also the Goodmans GFsat200HD with bright easy to follow colours and again very intuitive menus which are very easy to move through and understand, a feature which will suit all ages.
The cost made us consider this box may be poor compared with the rest but this is not the case as the Bush BFsat01HD is as good as the rest and the picture in upscale is also excellent. Argos can be proud of their Bush BFsat01HD as this is exclusive to them and we are sure many will want this box and not simply for the price difference.
Conclusion;
Price difference aside the Bush BFsat01HD freesat set top box is another winner for the viewer who is now spoilt for choice.
Personal opinions are going to play a huge part on selecting a sitting room addition of a freesat set top box as there is little difference in the picture quality in both HDMI and normal scart with the Grundig Gufsat 01HD the Goodmans GFsat200HD and the Bush BFsat01HD, all of these freesat set top boxes have good colour and the HDMI connection all HD viewers want is nothing less than superb so it will be a very difficult choice to make.
BUSH HD WEBSITE.
Is it news to you ? then you read it here first!
GOODMANS GFSAT200HD full scan for channels which the Goodmans GFsat200HD does it all itself while you can watch onscreen.
The freesat boxes in action are out on their own with respect to other modern television equipment.
The less viewers have to fiddle and tweak with switches etc...the better for those amongst us who are no longer capable or unable to, as it is these viewers who need TV much more than the rest of us. The Goodmans GFsat200HD fills this void admirably with the "Set Up And Forget", features.
Is it news to you ? then you read it here first!
GOODMANS GFSAT200HD postal code set up screen.
Like all the rest of the freesat family the postal code is remote control entered using muliple press's on the remote pad as regions will rely on this for regional news and future events and although the freesat boxes will accept any old U.K. Postal Code the freesat boxes will reject an unknown or made up postal code.

GOODMANS GFSAT200HD START UP.

GOODMANS GFSAT200HD start up screen which shows on start up.
The brilliant Auto Update is ideal for professional installers and armchair critics alike, it does everything itself with nothing but the odd button press from the Freesat set top box owner. The set up is simply childs play and so easy to follow.
Goodmans GFsat200HD is another picture prize winner.

GOODMANS GFSAT200HD REVIEW EXCLUSIVE.

GOODMANS GFSAT200HD REVIEW EXCLUSIVE.

GOODMANS GFSAT200HD BLACK FREESAT HD DIGITAL BOX was a delight to review and test for our report.
On receiving the Goodmans GFsat200HD set top box the first thing we noticed was the size of the HD packaging compared to the Goodmans gfsat100SD box. The HD has extra padding we pressume because of the HD architecture.
The Goodmans GFsat200HD is exactly the same as it's little brother the Goodmans GFsat100SD apart from the colour, the HD set top box is black and looks very chic whereas the SD looks very stylish with the silver finish, both have the unique blue front panel switch which is non obtrusive.
On switching on the Goodmans GFsat200HD for the first time the box checks and downloads all it needs to start doing it's thing. The Goodmans GFsat200HD is another brilliant box for those customers who will never ever want to dig into the insides of their set top boxes. This is another "set up and forget", set top box and we are delighted that no longer will there be any confusion with tuning in or problems for those viewers who will tell you, "I never touch that thing".
The Goodmans GFsat200HD tuned in all of the available channels ( I think it was 83? or thereabouts) and we tried it first using the scart, the result was similar to the Grundig Gufsat, and to say the picture is good understates it. We compared it with Freeview of which we get excellent pictures on all available channels, Goodmans GFsat200HD is better. We then tested the HDMI socket and on no channels could we spot flaws, the BBC HD was just stunning. The upscaling of the Goodmans GFsat200HD is similar to the Grundig Gufsat and also the Bush BFsat01HD, very impressive and we reckon the picture is what most viewers will make their number one choice before anything else.
The Goodmans GFsat200HD was tried on a Plasma screen and an LCD screen and on both the picture was comparable with a good quality DVD.
After having seen all Freesat boxes in action we cannot make up our minds which box has the best picture in HDMI, the vote is slightly ahead for me with this the Goodmans GFsat200HD.
I like the idea of the brick again on the cable the same as the BushBFsat01HD and the Grundig Gufsat01HD which keeps the boxes cool.
The EPG is similar to the Bush BFsat01HD and theGrundig Gufsat01HD, all clear, intuitive and easy to navigate between menus and a joy to use.
Conclusion;
The Goodmans GFsat200HD is a quality set top box which many will find they love, for picture quality and easy remote navigation. The picture upscaling and in HDMI is excellent and you would be hard pushed to find fault with this one.

HUMAX FOXSAT HD MULTI-SAT.

HUMAX FOXSAT MULTI-SAT.

HUMAX FOXSAT HD MULTI-SAT features for those who like to play with their electronic toys.
The Humax Foxsat although small in size compared to your everyday garden variety of satellite receivers is very impressive for a free to air digital set top box.
We decided we wanted to have a proper look at the Humax Foxsat and try the Humax from the secret DiseqC 1.2 menu.
Please note you do this at your own risk and if you muck up your box it is your own responsibility. Please also note; many variations can be tried with this little gem of a box.
We used the following; 1mtre satellite dish with Stab motor, Samsung multi-sat receiver using the Samsung as the Master and the Humax Foxsat as the slave on loop from the Samsung.
We used the Samsung to go from East to West to set the Humax Foxsat parameters as each time we attempted to set the Humax on it's own without the Samsung it homed on 1 West every time we tried memorising different satellites(we feel there maybe an update still to come for this?) We tried reset and factory reset with the same conclusion. It could have been unique to our Humax Foxsat.
From the Menu select setup---> we are interested in the dish graphic or third graphic from the top. Press right arrow key on the Humax Foxsat remote and move the highlight effect using your arrow keys on the Humax Foxsat remote to highlight "Manual Tune".
Enter the secret menu by pressing;
Red-->Green-->Yellow-->Blue-->, Green-->Yellow-->Blue.
This opens up;
"Antenna Settings", in "Antenna Settings" you are given the choice of;
Fixed Antenna
SCD Antenna
Motor Antenna
SMATV Antenna
For our exercise we selected "Motor Antenna", selecting "Motor Antenna", the Humax Foxsat warns you selecting "Motor Antenna" will delete all your channels. We chose to delete for this exercise.
We then used the remote to go into "Satellite Settings", and you then get a new choice of menu with;
Motor Settings
Edit Satellite Data
Position Setting
Limit Setting
We first entered "Limit Setting" to set max West and East on our dish.
We then entered "Motor Settings" and in the LNB frequency we set this to "Universal" and the LNB power to "Standard".
The motor type we set to; DiseqC 1.2.
Once set we pressed the Humax Foxsat remote left arrow button to go back into "Satellite Settings" and we then selected "Edit Satellite Data" and in this menu you are given the choice of "Satellite" which lets you leaf through the whole Clark Belt of Satellites.
For this exercise we chose Eurobird1 because it is at the same satellite position as Astra 2 or Freesat(also marked as Freesat 28.2 East). We o.k.'d this with the Humax Foxsat remote and in the same menu moved to "Activate Satellite" using the Humax Foxsat arrow down button.
We enabled the satellite with a couple of button press's and saved the settings again using the intuative arrow keys on the Humax Foxsat remote we again entered the satellite settings and selected the "Position Settings". In this menu you are presented with;
"Satellite
Transponder
Motor Driving.
We selected "Satellite" and leafing through the named satellites we chose Eurobird 1 again and o.k.'d this on the Humax Foxsat remote.
We then selected the "Transponder", and found you can either leaf through the known Eurobird 1 transponders or add your own manually (nice little touch).
We then selected 11224V 27500 as we wanted to find Classic FM.
We then selected "Motor Driving", and the choice was given as Continuous, Step, Time, just the same as the majority of motorised satellite systems, we set ours to continuous.
Underneath this menu you have a West and an East remote control positioner (great idea), we did NOT request it to go to the stored position as the box insisted on going to 1 West no matter what or how we loaded the information and memorised and saved it. We used the Samsung from loop to go to different sat positions. We settled on Eurobird 1, as we were already at 28.2 East we asked the Humax FoxsatHD to memorise and "Store Current Position" via the Humax Foxsat remote for Eurobird 1 the HUmax Foxsat then flashes a banner telling you "Current Position Has Been Saved".
From "Satellite Settings", using the Humax Foxsat arrow keys on the remote control we moved back to "Antenna Settings" and requested a search via the "Search" and then the remote OK button.
This is a basic guide to what we regard as a comprehensive "free-To-Air digital satellite receiver which is completely different from the other Freesat digital set top boxes on the go.
It would be wrong to try and compare this Freesat box with any of the others as this Freesat box is far more comprehensive than any of the Freesat boxes on sale. We have no doubt that the picture will sharpen up over time as each and every update makes major improvements until the boxes are complete. The Humax Foxsat menu system is not for the faint hearted and is solely a satellite enthusiasts dream for playing with, yet on the other hand it can also be used as a "Set up and Forget freesat digital set top box".
The Humax quality and expertise is showing everywhere and the secret menu system is not for everybody to play around in so unless you are familiar with satellite receivers we cannot really suggest viewers who are new to satellite systems to poke around inside the secret menu.
For those unsure how to get back to freesat tv from non-freesat tv, you enter the menu on the Humax Foxsat remote and in the settings the top graphic of the World and a watch you then see the main page with either freesat or non-freesat showing, simply change this with your remote control, o.k. this and press "Exit"--> this will take you into either freesat or non-freesat depending on what you chose.

BEIJING OLYMPIC RELAY DATE CHANGE.

BEIJING OLYMPICS RELAY DATE CHANGE.

(BEIJING, May 22) -- In support of earthquake relief efforts in Sichuan Province, the Sichuan leg of the Olympic Torch Relay will be shifted to August 3-5 from the originally scheduled dates of June 15-18.

According to the new arrangement, this will be the last relay leg before Beijing, which will see the Olympic flame entering the main stadium to start the Olympic Games on August 8, 2008.

The schedule of relay legs in other provinces and municipalities will be rearranged as well, according to the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay Center.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) urged integrity of the torch relay with the disaster relief efforts, making it a relay of love in contribution to the national relief efforts for earthquake-hit areas, and highlighting the concept of the "People's Olympics" during the relay.

The relay resumed on May 22 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province after a suspension from May 19 to 21 to mourn victims of the May 12 earthquake, which has caused a large number of casualties in Sichuan Province in southwestern China.
The Beijing Olympics are scheduled to have broadcast covarage on Freesat in glorious HD (high definition) with expected multi-screen choices.

HDMI to HDMI.

TV One Releases HDMI to HDMI Scaler with Audio Embedding/De-Embedding

The 1T-VS-626 is a high quality device that's ideal for situations where the HDMI source resolution and/or frame rate is incompatible with the display device’s resolution/frame rate.

Erlanger, KY , May 7, 2008—The latest video scaler added to TVOne-task’s inventory is the 1T-VS-626. It can accept audio embedded in the incoming HDMI signal or from the separate Toslink or analog stereo inputs. The HDMI output can then be scaled to the same or a different resolution. Output audio is simultaneously present embedded in the HMDI signal and separately as Toslink and analog stereo providing maximum flexibility for systems integration.

The 1T-VS-626 is both HDMI v1.1 and HDCP 1.1 Compliant. It has a maximum resolution of 1080p and WUXGA for both the input and output. It will also accept 480i or 576i SDTV resolutions. Advanced features, such as 3D Motion Adaptive De-Interlacing, 3:2 and 2:2 Pull-Down and 50/60 Frame Rate Conversion provide extremely high quality signal conversion. A comprehensive OSD menu and buttons allows selection of output resolution, adjustments of picture quality and audio source selection. It’s also possible to add up to 150ms of audio delay to compensate for lip sync errors.

A small inline power adapter is provided with a locking DC connector for security. The unit has a suggested retail price of $349 and is shipping.

TV ONE PRESS RELEASE.

SONY HD CAMERAS.

Press release from Sony.

Doctors starts shooting in HD

“I only use Sony cameras, because of their reliability, and the support for me, which is brilliant. For a show like this, with four cameras running at all times, plus two spare cameras, that’s essential.”

The BBC series, Doctors, is now being shot on high definition, the first BBC continuing drama to make the switch. The first HD episodes start transmitting on 18 March.

Doctors is an half-hour soap which has been made in Birmingham since 2000, featuring gritty story lines including sex trafficking and a teenager with the HIV virus.

This daytime soap has become even more important to the BBC since Neighbours switched to Channel Five in February, in a ten-year deal. Now Doctors is pitted against the Australian veteran at 1.45pm every weekday.

The number of episodes has been increased this year, for its tenth series, from 185 to 215, which means that many of the core team are working all year round.

But this pioneering production has another important role to play — in the digital future. Since 14 January, Doctors has been shot in High Definition using Sony HDW-750P HDCAM camcorders.

This makes it the first BBC continuing drama series to embrace the switch. The production, which revolves around a fictional medical practice called The Mill, and a long-standing cast of around eight, records three months in advance of broadcast. But at present, because of costs, post production is still in standard definition, and will be so for some months to come.

Doctors is expected to be part of an expanded BBC HD channel once Freesat and a Freeview HD standard is agreed. Until now, most HD programmes have been high budget shows. In contrast, Doctors operates on a tight budget of £50,000 per half-hour episode.
Moving forward

Executive producer Will Trotter says: “It’s all about the future, it’s a test bed. People like us, a big production centre, we can’t wait, we’ve got to take the initiative, tear up the rules and keep pushing forward.”

The cameras, sound equipment and cameramen have been supplied by Transmission(TX) Ltd. Jon Boyce, managing director, says: “I only use Sony cameras, because of their reliability, and the support for me, which is brilliant. For a show like this, with four cameras running at all times, plus two spare cameras, that’s essential.”

GOOGLE AND STOP BAD WARE.

SNIPPET;
GOOGLE AND STOP BAD WARE join forces against unsafe websites.
Google have introduced warnings which will benefit web surfers everywhere. Websurfers are given the choice to retreat or carry on if they inadvertently attempt to surf to a website that has been red flagged by the "Stop Badware Organisation".
If after being warned the surfer is foolish enough to ignore the Google warning and carry on they only have themselves to blame as potentially unsafe websites are on the rise. As time goes on the warning will become more detailed but as a new venture this can only be good for internet surfers who sometimes fall innocent victim to malicious scripts and malware.

FREESAT TV BUDGET INSTALLATION.

FREESAT TV BUDGET INSTALLATION and make friends at the same time.

To continue our economical Freesat installations and different ways to set up your Freesat HD digital box and satellite dish.
You won't find this on many manuals but there is nothing to stop you getting Freesat dish and cabling on a budget.
Visit your neighbours and ask them if they want Freesat on a budget ? Your more than likely to get a positive response.
Decide where you want the dish to be sited on one of four houses and then fit a quad LNB with four coax cables coming from the quad LNB. No laws are being broken unless as normal you have to apply in conservation areas to your local council so the satellite dish plus cables can be sited for the benefit of the local by-laws and the environment, maybe somewhere hidden for example. You can then have the choice of Freesat satellite receivers all for 25% of the normal installation costs.
We have never understood why for the benefit of the environment this has never been implemented throughout the U.K. and with a single cable solution being much more environmentally and user friendly we suggest this as an alternative to consider along with other types of installations.
Other types of installation are;
Freesat and sky....here!

FREESAT AB SWITCH.

FREESAT AB SWITCH.

FREESAT MULTI CONNECTIONS are possible in a variety of different ways. As well as being able to connect in different permutations it can make much more economical sense and stops more holes being drilled in your walls.
In answer to Naheem from Spain;
no! you are not forced to add more wires to your sky system and no! you are not forced to buy another LNB quad or other wise just yet as we still do not have a TVR on the sales counters, In fact because you have no intention of buying multi-room you can run your sky set up and Freesat using one single wire.
To explain; the graphic shows the basic type of manual AB switch(cost about £4) which has a simple slider control which you can move manually to change to a different satellite box. In the graphic we have given only one possible way but these can be changed to suit your own personal set up.
For example; you wish to watch your new Grundig Gufsat/Goodmans GFSAT/Bush BFSAT/Humax Foxsat then you simply switch off your sky receiver and your any type of satellite receiver and your Grundig Gufsat will show(it will anyway as this box is very good for loopthrough such as shown). If you wish to watch your other satellite receiver simply switch off the Grundig Gufsat and your sky receiver and slide your AB switch to the desired direction.
We show a manual switch(as an example) but AB switches come in all sorts of different types with different names from AB switches to Data Transfer Switches, but either way this can be done automatically for a little more cash than the manual AB switch and all you do is plug and play. As can be seen, no more wires are needed from the satellite dish just yet. We have shown a simple Freesat and sky set up here which also shows a different way but is equally workable without adding anything except a couple of F-connectors to a short piece of coax cable. We have also to consider the possibility of TVR's in the future, will the new TVR need yet another wire ? or will the possibility of the metadata from Freesat be able to download multimedia into our boxes on one single cable ? we shall have to wait and see. We already know our telephone wires are going to be used with the Freesat ethernet connections.

HDTV RESOLUTION GUIDE.

HDTV RESOLUTION GUIDE.

Much has been said about HDTV but little has been published for the visual aid for those
unfamiliar with the actual types of graphics available to TV and computer screens.
High definition TV has two formats, 720p and 1080i
These terms are explained in the graphic which can be clicked on to enlarge.
720p has over two times the resolution of current standard resolution TV's.
1080i has five times the resolution of current standard resolution TV's.
The extra lines gives a far more detailed and clearer picture.
Please see the graphic and using the legend below this may help to

FLYING THE FLAG FOR BRITAIN.

FLYING THE FLAG FOR BRITAIN.

Yes you read it correctly, it is time some of these so called responsible forums stopped blatantly engineering threads simply to run down the "British Establishment", including the BBC/ITV venture which has still to surface completely, we are not just writing resident smart mouths we are talking about deliberate manipulation by website administrators generating hostile and targeted slander. As a licence fee subscriber I do not appreciate forum members running down the Freesat venture of which the majority of the British public are doing there British duty as a captive audience and paying to make it a success. Perhaps if these so called well known forums engineered an honest and genuine thread telling viewers how beneficial it will be because there is no monthly payment due and no more premium rate telephone helplines.
We make no secret we want Freesat "set up and forget boxes",to succeed for the majority of the British public including our Mums and Dads, Aunties and Uncles, Brothers and Sisters so why on earth do forum subscribers continually run down our establisment. Politics we can understand, but our Free TV we cannot. What else can you get for free these days ?
Free TV is something we can soon take for granted and it makes little difference to our wallet if the programmes do not live up to expectations as we are already paying for a licence fee.
The truth about Freesat is the metadata is the technical mystery and NOT future programming. We have been told 200+ channels are possible with at least 8 of them being HD(high definition) and it is as simple as that.
We have also been informed about the multimedia plans for Freesat, and like all good plans some will still be fluid so therefore open to adjustment. Until future plans are eched in stone we are unlikely to know 100% TV of tomorrow, so to all you poison pen scratchers please give our Free TV a chance to start up and run for a few months before sitting as judge, jury and pre-judgement as is normal armchair executioner.
Is it news to you ? then I'm sorry to say in this case you read it here first!

COMPARE FREESAT HD BOX AND FREESAT SD BOXES?

COMPARE FREESAT HD BOX AND FREESAT SD BOXES?

Picture shows a Humax HD Box with with both HDMI and component out connections required for displaying HD Pictures on a HDTV Set.

Some well known Forums and Blogs are making it impossible for its members to understand the differences between a Freesat HD Box and a Freesat SD Box. FREESAT HD DIGITAL BOXES can both display HD and SD content at the same time without the need for the Freesat owner being in the possession of an HDTV, this is because Freesat HD boxes are designed to down scale the HD picture to SD PQ using the scart lead out from the HD Freesat Box. This also means that if you already have an HD TV then it will display the pictures at either 720p or 1080i through the HDMI out on the HD Freesat Digital Box. Being the owner of both an HD Freesat Box and an HDTV does not stop there this box also up scales all Freesat SD pictures to near HD PQ! FREESAT SD DIGITAL BOXES are NOT HD Ready and can never be as they don't have an on-board HD Tuner or any connections that can display on to an HD READY TV SET. Both the Freesat HD and SD boxes both share Multimedia Connections for future Freesat TV Broadband and interactive services!

KANGAROO HOPS INTO U.K.

KANGAROO HOPS INTO U.K.

Kangaroo yes, but not the grey marsupial kind is slowly hopping into our lives.
With Freesat slowly taking steps into our sitting rooms we can expect the joint efforts of all broadcasters taking part in the conglomeration of another channel platform named Kangaroo.
Kangaroo has been under scrutiny for some time for various reasons as more and more internet users expect more and more return for their internet fee and it stands to reason somewhere along the line something would give, hence Kangaroo was contrived for everybody.
From the plan of BT in the U.K. of extending and updating "big time", the internet platforms(hopefully by 2011) throughout the U.K. to "specific", pay to view at the press of a button and not pay to view as a "ball and chain", round viewers necks for a contract with no "get out clause", and a so called helpline at "premium rate", prices.
The idea eventually of paying for a "one of", event seems more palatable to accept although it would taste much sweeter if it was free as we already pay for a TV licence.
Kangaroo will come from all programme providers in the U.K. and hopefully a few more to give only the best type of entertainment so little wonder other European countries are hopping onto this particular bandwaggon.
When Freesat and viewers with TVR's (television video recorders with Freesat metadata ability) for Freesat get into full swing gone will be the load on the servers but at a cost still to be decided as sensible. With the new TVR we could easily see Push-Video as another new type medium which will spread the downloads into your TVR and from there you select your viewing with no server hassle or internet time delay.
At the moment the scenario reads those on a capped internet maximum of 4gbs per month can only watch around 40 hours of video and less for HD which is ludicrous for example; film buffs who will only get 20 films per month before their internet cap steps in. The average viewer will watch around 150 hours per month so a little hint for the TVR manufacturers here...the hard disc can never be big enough! The BBC video stream of around 100mb per hour will change with the new metadata so this will improve speed and download ability. You have to consider the next awful step and that is of course tiered internet rates which may be good for the consumer but not in the long term as we again see similar situations when we get involved with contracts.
Kangaroo is another TV life changer which will soon be with us, for the good? it must be or they wouldn't have spent so much time and effort developing it.

GRUNDIG GUFSAT UPDATE.

SNIPPET;

Full Freesat took another step closer today with the
Grundig Gufsat updating to remove engineer banners and
amazingly improving the picture view. It is worth taking note
there was no factory recall on this box even although it was never on sale to begin with so the negative vibes coming from well known supposedly responsible forums have proven nonsense. This update has again enhanced an already top of the range Freesat HD digital box and as this box is a set up and forget unit with a stunning picture it will find many loyal friends willing to add it to their sitting room.
Update number is 1.1.16 which means nothing to anybody except those who are in the fortunate position of owning this set up and forget it Freesat HD digital box.

FREESAT GOODMANS GFSAT HUMAX FOXSAT AND SAMSUNG EXCLUSIVE.

FREESAT GOODMANS GFSAT HUMAX FOXSAT AND SAMSUNG.

FREESAT DIGITAL BOXES can run anyway you want them to, here's the set up of how to, and a little review of how we see it!
With all the negative talk and misleading information hitting the well known forums we decided to put a few records straight. Some of the fanciful ideas coming form forum members who do not have any digital box and intend never to have one is quite amazing. As most of you know and for those who have been in touch personally, then this report is for you, and for our overseas writers this will answer a few questions we hope, but please keep in mind nobody has supplied proof to us personally yet, we reckon 1.5/7 mtrs but we expect positive reports soon about minimum dish sizes even although we obviously cannot condone Freesat box use outside the U.K.
We tested the loop through completely and we have found this set-up still works with one single cable.
We first tried the Samsung as master and hooked the Goodmans gfsat using the loopthrough and using the Goodmans gfsat loopthrough hooked up the Humax Foxsat making the Humax third in line...all worked and all worked 100%. We tried all sorts of permutations without problems.
We then hooked up the Goodmans gfsat as master to the Samsung and finally the Humax Foxsat and again tried and tested all sorts of permutations without problems.
We then tested the four boxes but still leaving the Humax to last but replacing third in line with a Pace HD free-to-view box and still it worked with no visible signal loss. We used a 1mtre dish for our tests and a .02 lnb with a 20 mtre coax run and no inline amps...very impressive!
Is it news to you ? then you read it here first!
P.S.
Keep your eyes peeled for Freesat stocks coming back into stores this incoming week!

FREESAT OPENING SOON.

FREESAT OPENING SOON.

If our jungle drums are to be believed then Freesat will be rolling out properly this incoming
week starting as of the 18th of May.
This was the original date passed to us from our source many weeks ago and reported both here and in our multimedia forum so we shall soon see.
The guessing games have surfaced on many forums with reports of the 1st of may up until a few days ago when it seemed everybody gave up and although Freesat gave the 6th May it got started as a damp squib.
The rumour factory has been working overtime with Freesat but nothing could be more crazy with intelligent posters making suggestions a recall has been made on something that has never been made public, but like all good urban rumours no proof can be found so one assumes dirty tricks at play here. The new Freesat boxes have come under fire for being different in the sense that these new Freesat digital boxes have the nerve to be totally capable of looking after themselves with respect to auto updating and set up and forget features. We believe that Freesat digital boxes are designed for the viewer who has more to do than watch TV all day. We are delighted that nobody can complain about the truly excellent Freesat digital picture quality on boxes like the Grundig Gufsat or the Goodmans SD digital box or the excellent EPG's on Freesat digital boxes on the whole.
BBC reports suggest a shortage on boxes but some retailers will accept advanced orders but we believe this week may well see an upsurge in Freesat box availabilty.
Prices we think will stay quite stable for a while as promises of multimedia projects are thick on the ground and with knowledge of other European countries jumping on the Freesat bandwagon for their own countries we maybe a step closer to multi lingual programming, not forgetting the new Freesat digital boxes can get an over the air update at any time with the special architecture of the Freesat metadata.

UFO's IN WALES

SNIPPET;
Secret Ministry of Defence (MoD) files detailing sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) in Wales have been made public for the first time.

ITALIAN FREESAT.

As we reported some months ago on this blog we suggested at that time
other European broadcasters may follow the lead of BBC/ITV with the
Freesat platform model, it looks as if we may have been correct.

Italian commercial network Mediaset has begun talks with public broadcaster RAI over plans to run a free digital satellite offer that would complement the existing DTT packages.

The Italian ‘freesat’ would use the Eutelsat Hot Bird neighbourhood at 13 degrees East where the two broadcasters channels have been relayed for many years. Both sets of channels, including RAI Uno, RAI Due, Rete 4 and Canale 5 are broadcast in the clear.

News of the talks follows the collapse of negotiations between Mediaset and Sky Italia over the sale of movie rights.

***

Speaking at the Czech Association of Competitive Communications (CACC) conference in Prague last week, Martin Kubacki, MD, Astra CEE, said it was looking increasingly likely that the Polish public broadcaster TVP would launch a ‘Freesat-style’ DTH platform in Poland later this year.

We especially like the way to check out the week ahead using the "yellow button" and the "blue button". Press yellow for the following 24 hours press it again for the following day and so on. Press blue to reverse this and again so intuitive.

GOODMANS GFSAT 100SD POSTAL CODE.

This graphic shows the postal code set up screen.
If any of these boxes could be faulted it is the postal code settings choice. The less dexterous will have problems.
The argument is there for those unable to use the postal code set up an engineer will set it for them but we feel although this menu is needed to check TV licence holders it is a worthless exercise as anybody wanting a Freesat box will give out false information anyway and simply pay cash in exactly the same way as they do at present for any item that requires personal information.
